Metal detectors at JCPS?

Metal Detectors in JCPS?

Last week, I met with Dr. Raisor, the Chief Operations Officer for JCPS to discuss the possibility of putting metal detectors/magnetometers in all JCPS middle and high schools.  It was a productive first meeting, and there will be more.

There are many people working on this issue, including but not limited to Scott Drabenstadt, Bob Bornstein, Nick Mudd and me.  There is also an upcoming community conversation on October 20, 2016 at the Chestnut Street YMCA at 6:30 pm.

As far at the meeting went last week, various security methods and levels were discussed; ranging from what JCPS does now to metal detectors at all the schools.  Apparently, JCPS does at least 2 sweeps a day at schools for guns and drugs and these are random searches, but every secondary school gets swept at least every 7 weeks. Some primary schools are also swept, but not all of them. This is something I didn’t know and JCPS does not publicize, but in my opinion they should as it would make some parents (me included) feel better about ongoing security steps being taken in the schools.

Other things discussed, up to and including metal detectors at all the schools, are officers at each school, a mobile metal detector system which would also be randomly at all the secondary schools (instead of having them at every school every day) and increased sweeps through the schools.

As this is an ongoing discussion, please contact your school board member and let them know your thoughts on this.  No one knows the best answer in this situation, but we all want the children in Jefferson County to feel safe and be safe when they go to school.
